Sensory Modulation: Using a Sensory Lens with Clients is the alternate name for this course                  (it has been rebranded)

Sensory modulation is the use of specific and tailored sensory input to change the way a person feels, helping them to feel:

• More safe and secure
• Less anxious and more calm
• Less overwhelmed and more grounded
• More able to connect with others
• More able to engage in meaningful activities and routines

This three part pre-recorded webinar series and powerpoint presentation focuses on sensory modulation and its application with regard to a range of support and living environments. This includes inpatient mental health units, high dependency units, residential, rehabilitation and respite facilities as well as various accommodations including independent, shared and supported housing. Participants will expand their understanding of sensory modulation as an intervention and enhance their ability to tailor strategies to the unique needs of the individual, by enhancing the following sensory skills:

• using an observational sensory lens
• turning down sensory input
• sensory strategies to reverse physiology
• the dive reflex to change physiology
• assessing the impact of the support/living environment with a sensory lens
• making sure sensory approaches are SAIM (safe, appropriate, individualised and meaningful)
• sensory strategies to facilitate occupational/activity engagement
• explaining and exploring sensory modulation

The three part webinar series consists of:

• Sensory modulation and the person, environment and occupations (PEO)
• An overview of sensory modulation
• The 8 senses and their impact on PEO

Webinar 2

• How sensory modulation works
• Factors that impact a person’s sensory needs
• The impact of trauma on our sensory system

Webinar 3

• Sensory modulation strategies used in the support/living environment with respect to PEO
• Practical tips including how to explain sensory modulation to others
• Additional resources

Throughout each webinar, participants will be invited to pause the recording for the opportunities to reflect on content or engage in an activity to help consolidate learning. A range of handouts and worksheets are also accessible for participant use.

Who is this suitable for?

The webinar series is suitable for allied health, nurses, medical staff, health assistants and support workers. Family members can also gain benefit from building understanding and awareness of sensory modulation strategies to support health, well-being and occupational functioning.

Trainers:

 The webinars are presented by Carolyn Fitzgibbon and Julie O’Sullivan. Carolyn and Julie are two experienced OTs who have worked together for many years and share considerable knowledge and practical experience in the implementation of sensory modulation and approaches, at both direct client and service development levels. Together Carolyn & Julie have conducted many webinars and workshops for mental health districts and on behalf of OT Australia on sensory modulation and the integration of these approaches into service delivery. Carolyn and Julie have also co-authored the Sensory Modulation Resource Manual.
