Sexual intimacy is a meaningful and valued part of life. However, many people find that their ability to fully enjoy and participate in intimacy can be affected by sensory sensitivities, stress, trauma, fatigue, pain, or differences in how their body responds.
This self-directed course explores how sensory modulation can be used in practical, empowering ways to support comfort, safety, pleasure, and connection in sexual intimacy.
The training is divided into three videos:
Video 1 – Foundations
- What sensory modulation is and how it works
- Understanding sensory processing and sensory differences
- The impact of sexual trauma and why safety matters
Video 2a – Understanding Sexual Response
- The Dual Control Model of sexual response
- How excitation and inhibition systems influence arousal
- Factors that increase or reduce sexual responsiveness
Video 2b – Practical Application
- Applying sensory modulation strategies to sexual intimacy
- Building sensory awareness in intimate contexts
- Using the DIN model (Decreasing, Increasing, and Adding new sensory input)
- Communication strategies that promote safety, comfort, and mutual understanding

Carolyn Fitzgibbon and Julie O’Sullivan are the co-directors of Sensory Modulation Brisbane. Carolyn and Julie are experienced OTs who have worked together for over 25 years and share extensive knowledge and practical experience in the implementation of sensory modulation and sensory approaches, at both intervention and service development levels.
